Volvo FH Aero The Most Ambitious On The Roads

MyTruck Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Nuray Pekcan, visited the Volvo Trucks Center in Hadımköy.

During her interviews to get an up-close look at the Volvo FH Aero, Kıvanç Kızılkaya, COO of Commercial Vehicles at Marubeni Distribution and Service Inc.; Tolunay Kartaloğlu, Country Manager of Volvo Trucks After-Sales Services at Marubeni Distribution and Service Inc.; Volvo Trucks Product Manager Orçun Bancıoğlu and Abdurrahman Yılmaz, owner of Metalog Logistics, shared all the details about the model with our readers.

"THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THE AERO IS THAT IT REDUCES CARBON MONOXIDE EMISSIONS"

"IT PROVIDES UP TO 5% FUEL SAVINGS"

"OUR VEHICLES WILL START ARRIVING AS OF OCTOBER"

Discussing Volvo Trucks' global standing, COO of Commercial Vehicles at Marubeni Distribution and Service Inc. Kıvanç Kızılkaya, emphasized Turkey's position within the company and indicated that; “Turkey ranks first among 95 countries.” Kızılkaya noted that they finished last year as the top importer of heavy commercial vehicles and continue at the same pace this year. Highlighting the power, comfort, and safety their vehicles provide to users, he also emphasized their strong authorized service network across Turkey and Europe, which ensures customer support. Speaking about Volvo Trucks' newest flagship, the Volvo FH Aero, Kızılkaya underscored the vehicle's fuel savings of up to 5% and its most significant feature of reducing carbon monoxide emissions.

"Volvo Trucks is Represented in 79 Countries"

"We Provide Power, Comfort, and Safety"

Starting his words by stating that Volvo Trucks is one of the three largest manufacturers in the world and continuing  with remarks about the brand's global positioning, Kıvanç Kızılkaya said that;  “Volvo Trucks serves the world with the production of approximately 150,000 vehicles and is represented in 79 countries. We have factories in various countries, including the United States. We provide our customers with power, comfort, and our unchanging value: safety. We never compromise on safety when producing our vehicles, and we offer them to customers worldwide.”

"We Finished Last Year as the Leader in Imported Heavy Commercial Vehicles, and We're Continuing with the Same Momentum This Year"

"We Have a Very Strong Authorized Service Network in Turkey and Europe"

Mentioning that Volvo Trucks has been represented in Turkey since the 1990s and highlighting that they have always been the choice of customers who prioritize safety and power, Kıvanç Kızılkaya spoke about the Turkish market and said that; “Recently, as Marubeni Distribution and Service Inc., we decided to further expand our customer portfolio, focusing particularly on fleet customers. We finished last year as the leader in imported heavy commercial vehicles, and we are continuing with the same momentum this year. We have primarily built our position around power, safety, and fuel efficiency. In addition to these, another key value of Volvo Trucks vehicles is their Uptime, meaning their uninterrupted time on the road. We have a very strong authorized service network in Turkey and especially in Europe. International transport companies prefer our brand because of the extensive service network abroad, the uninterrupted operation of the vehicles, the quick provision of service, and the ability to deliver their goods to customers on time. This is one of the key values we hold.”

"We Serve Every Sector That Requires Heavy Commercial Vehicles Over 16 Tons"

Continuing his remarks by stating that Volvo Trucks serves every sector that requires heavy commercial vehicles over 16 tons, Kıvanç Kızılkaya said that; “This includes international transport, domestic transport, construction, mining, and urban distribution from warehouses. We can provide direct service to all these sectors.”

"Authorized Service and Quality Stand Out with Volvo Trucks"
"Companies that Prioritize Total Operating Costs Choose Volvo Trucks"

Highlighting the reasons for choosing Volvo Trucks, Kıvanç Kızılkaya stated that; “When it comes to investment costs, Volvo Trucks is one of the premium segment brands. However, when we look at wheel rotation time, fuel efficiency, and maintenance and repair costs, the total acquisition cost becomes acceptable. The most important feature of heavy commercial vehicles is their ability to generate income while in operation. Our continuous focus is on our authorized service and the quality of these services. It is crucial to keep the vehicle on the road as much as possible. In this regard, Volvo Trucks stands out significantly and starts to create added value. The key values in heavy commercial vehicles are uninterrupted uptime, fuel savings, and the profits they provide to companies. Therefore, companies that prioritize total operating costs rather than just investment costs choose Volvo Trucks.”

"The Most Important Feature of the Aero is That It Reduces Carbon Monoxide Emissions"

"It Provides Fuel Savings of Up to 5%"

Continuing his remarks by discussing the Volvo FH Aero and sharing the model's standout features, Kıvanç Kızılkaya said that; “Sweden was the first country to sign the Paris Agreement, and the company that followed suit was Volvo. The brand is very sensitive about this issue. The most important feature of the Aero is that it reduces carbon monoxide emissions. With its design that minimizes wind resistance, it provides fuel savings of up to 5%. As a result, it produces less carbon monoxide. This means the Aero not only focuses on fuel savings but also on the future of us and our children. Therefore, it is essential to examine how much fuel the vehicle consumes and how environmentally friendly it is under these two headings.”

Kızılkaya also mentioned that they position the Aero for international and intercity transport.

"Our Vehicles Will Start Arriving as of October"

Noting that there is significant ongoing demand for the Volvo FH Aero, Kıvanç Kızılkaya said that; “Right now, all of our customers want to try the Aero. We brought our first five vehicles for both the launch and to enter the Turkish market. We completed our deliveries in August. The other vehicles will start arriving as of October.”

"Feedback from Drivers and Customers is Always Taken Seriously"

"Our Vehicles Are Released to the Market After Testing for Millions of Kilometers"

Expressing that feedback from drivers and customers is always taken seriously by Volvo and that continuous efforts are made to improve based on this feedback, Kıvanç Kızılkaya said that; “A designer doesn’t just create a vehicle based on their own dreams; they also consider how much that design will impact the customer or driver. For example, they expand the interior space, make the steering wheel more user-friendly, and design features that enable the driver to cover thousands of kilometers without fatigue or boredom. Furthermore, our vehicles are released to the market after extensive testing, spanning millions of kilometers, in terms of fuel efficiency and all areas needing improvement. Additionally, every Volvo employee is responsible for reporting any information received from the field to Volvo. All feedback is documented and collected. If requests come from 1,000 to 1,500 people, they are automatically directed for implementation and development.”

"Turkey Ranks First Among 95 Countries"

"Turkey Holds a Very Valuable Position at Volvo"

Speaking about Turkey's position in Volvo Trucks, Kıvanç Kızılkaya stated that; “Volvo has three major markets: Volvo Trucks America, Volvo Trucks Europe, and Volvo Trucks International. Turkey is part of the international market, among 95 countries. Moreover, Turkey ranks first among these 95 countries in terms of quantity, services provided, and growth momentum. Therefore, Turkey is given significant importance. With the support we receive from Volvo, we are able to reflect this status. Currently, Turkey holds a very valuable position in the Volvo world.”

"Once a Volvo is Purchased, There is Definitely a Continuation"

Stating that “Once you buy a Volvo, your driver has little chance of switching to another vehicle.” Kıvanç Kızılkaya continued his words by saying that; “This is because comfort, safety, and the driver’s needs are prioritized, and once a Volvo is purchased, there is definitely a continuation. We see many examples of this in fleets; companies that have never used Volvo before start automatically converting their fleets to Volvo after acquiring our vehicles.”

"We Train All Our Drivers"

"It's Not Very Possible to Use the Vehicle Efficiently Without Training"

Emphasizing that Volvo Trucks is always by the side of its customers and drivers when it comes to training, Kıvanç Kızılkaya said that; “Since the day we started as Marubeni Distribution and Service Inc., we have been training our drivers in both the construction and transportation sectors with our driver trainer. These can be on-site trainings, and sometimes we can also provide group training at our own office. There are many electronic features in the vehicle, and when we combine all of these for truly efficient usage, we can achieve the fuel levels we discuss. This is why training is very important.”

The availability rate in this warehouse is at 94%—achieving 94% in the automotive industry is a significant success rate. Additionally, during the pandemic and especially during the chip crisis, we received many signals of slowdowns, but Volvo was very active in this regard and took the necessary measures to ensure that vehicles could get back on the road as soon as possible. They provided us with substantial support through air cargo and fast delivery systems.

"Our Customers Can Reach Us Through Our Call Center and Regional Managers"

Stating that they have a significant organization in place to ensure customers can reach them, Kartaloğlu said that; “We have a call center that operates 24/7. Companies calling from this call center can easily reach us. Additionally, our Instagram and other social media channels also allow our customers to get in touch with us. Alongside this, our after-sales area managers are constantly in the field within our sales regions. These colleagues are in constant communication with all the companies we work with. If they encounter any issues, they can directly contact us. I would say that this is perhaps our strongest asset.”

"WHILE INCREASING AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE, WE HAVE ELEVATED FUEL PERFORMANCE TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL"

"VOLVO TRUCKS BRAND VEHICLES ARE DESIGNED TO OPERATE UNDER ALL CHALLENGING CONDITIONS"

"WE ALWAYS USE THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES IN SAFETY"

We thoroughly examined the Volvo FH Aero with Orçun Bancıoğlu, the Product Manager of Volvo Trucks. We took a detailed look at the vehicle's new aerodynamic structure, as well as the important features and components that ensure safety and comfort. The Volvo FH Aero not only raises the bar in fuel efficiency but also enhances safety and comfort. Here are all the features of the Volvo FH Aero.

“We Achieved Fuel Savings of Up to 5% by Reducing Wind Resistance”

Starting by discussing the innovations made in the exterior design of the Volvo FH Aero, Bancıoğlu said that; “Volvo Trucks designed this cabin to enhance aerodynamic performance and maximize fuel efficiency. The exterior design of the Aero optimizes airflow, reducing wind resistance, which results in fuel savings of up to 5% depending on driving conditions. The extended front nose, the widened hood curvature, and the reinforcement of insulation between the components on the front hood and the roof panel optimize airflow, achieving less wind resistance.”

“The Camera Mirror Option Reduces Wind Resistance and Provides the Driver with a Wider Field of View”

Continuing his discussion on the mirror options offered by Volvo Trucks in the Aero, Bancıoğlu said that; “One of the options we provide with Volvo Aero is the camera mirror option. This option results in even lower wind resistance. Instead of mirrors, camera arms are used. From a safety perspective, it also provides the driver with a wider field of view. In all our vehicles, the front approach mirror is standard, while the blind spot mirror can be chosen as an option.”

"Volvo Trucks Vehicles Are Designed to Operate in All Challenging Conditions"

Stating that Volvo Trucks vehicles are generally designed to operate in all challenging conditions, Bancıoğlu continued; “The three-fan cooling system, in particular, provides high-performance cooling in more demanding conditions. Additionally, while optimizing airflow in the Aero, air taken from the front grille is delivered to the radiator more efficiently. This also contributes to cooling by providing higher airflow.”

“The Air Cabin Suspension Minimizes Impacts Transmitted to the Cabin”

“It Contributes to Both Comfort and Safety”

Stating that the Volvo FH Aero features air cabin suspension, Bancıoğlu said that; “This minimizes impacts from the road transmitted to the cabin. At the same time, it is controlled by advanced electronic systems, allowing for necessary adjustments based on road conditions or the driver's preferences. It provides a comfortable ride and contributes to safety by reducing driver fatigue.”

“Volvo Trucks Uses Different Material Technologies”

Bancıoğlu said that; "While Volvo Trucks improves aerodynamics, it also uses different material technologies to reduce the vehicle's weight and minimize the risk of metal parts causing damage to other components in the event of an accident. With parts made from state-of-the-art materials like plastics and fibers, we achieve both weight reduction and prevent damage to other components during an accident."

"Volvo Trucks Always Uses the Latest Technologies in Safety"

"The Cabin of the Vehicle Flexes Forward or Backward in the Event of an Accident"

Emphasizing that Volvo Trucks utilizes the latest technologies in safety and providing insights into the vehicle's cabin structure Bancıoğlu said that; “The cabin structure of the vehicle is designed to flex forward or backward in the event of an accident. In the case of a frontal impact, the cabin moves backward to minimize the force of the impact transmitted to the driver and passengers.”

"We Produce Vehicles Tailored to Customer Needs"

"Having the Battery at the Rear Provides a More Balanced Load Distribution"

Providing information about the vehicle's battery, Bancıoğlu said that; "Volvo Trucks produces vehicles tailored to customer needs. In this vehicle, the battery is located on the side, behind the cabin. This can be adjusted based on different requirements. For example, if a parking air conditioning system is to be installed and dual battery usage is required, we can place the second battery at the back. Alternatively, if our customer wants to increase the fuel tank size, moving the batteries to the rear is also an option available at the factory. If there is a need to reduce the weight on the front axle, we can again move the battery to the back. By relocating the battery to the rear, the load distribution becomes more balanced, and the load on the front axle is reduced."

"I-Shift Transmission's Key Feature is Its Fuel Efficiency"

"I-Shift Includes Intelligent Braking Support"

Explaining Volvo Trucks' intelligent transmission system known as I-Shift, which has been in use for a long time, Bancıoğlu said that; "One of the key features of this transmission is its fuel efficiency. I-Shift optimizes the driving experience by selecting the most suitable gear based on road conditions and load status. Additionally, compared to a manual transmission, it provides smooth and seamless gear changes. Moreover, since I-Shift works in harmony with the engine and other components, it minimizes wear and damage during gear shifts. It also includes intelligent braking support. Whenever the transmission detects a need for braking, I-Shift provides additional brake assistance. In various road conditions, such as slippery surfaces, it enhances the vehicle's traction by using optimized gear options."

"We Provide Dual Batteries as Standard in Vehicles with Parking Air Conditioning"

Stating that they can add factory-installed parking air conditioning to all vehicles designed for long-haul transportation and emphasizing that they also provide dual batteries as standard in vehicles with parking air conditioning, Bancıoğlu said that; "We ensure the continuous protection of the starting batteries. When the driver takes a break, they can rely on the second battery for cooling and other essential energy needs, ensuring that the starting batteries are ready to go when it’s time to hit the road."

“Volvo Engine Brake is Standard on All Vehicles”

“Retarder is One of the Options Offered by Volvo”

Stating that the retarder is one of the options offered by Volvo and mentioning that the Volvo engine brake, which is developed by Volvo, is standard on all vehicles, Bancıoğlu continued his words by saying that;  “We can especially offer the combination of the retarder and the Volvo engine brake for our customers operating in heavy transport or mountainous areas.”

“Electronic Components Provide Additional Measures to Further Protect the Vehicle”

Stating that the vehicle is equipped with systems and sensors that continuously monitor the engine and other components, Bancıoğlu provided the following example; “For instance, there are sensors that continuously measure the oil level and quality in the engine. If there is a drop in the oil level or an issue with the oil quality, these sensors alert the driver on the display screen, preventing additional damage to the vehicle. In this context, these electronic components provide additional measures to further protect the vehicle.”

“Trailer Dynamic Stability Control System is Available”

“The Speeds of the Trailer's Wheels are Measured, and Tire Pressures are Monitored”

Stating that Volvo Trucks has developed a trailer dynamic stability control system to ensure the harmonious operation of the vehicle with the superstructure, Bancıoğlu explained this as follows; “This system continuously measures the speeds of the trailer's wheels to prevent the trailer from tipping over or skidding, and when there is a need for braking, it applies power to each wheel separately. Additionally, the tire pressures on the trailers are continuously monitored, and if there is low pressure, the system also alerts the driver. All of this can work in harmony with the vehicle, providing warnings to the driver when necessary to prevent accidents or sudden stops.”

“Radar Systems Prevent Potential Accident Situations”

Stating that the new GSR regulation includes radar systems aimed at protecting passengers and pedestrians in traffic, which are also present in the Aero, Bancıoğlu explained this as follows; "These systems provide audible and visual warnings to the driver when they detect any danger outside, helping to prevent potential accidents. Additionally, the rear brake lights feature emergency stop brakes, which alert following drivers in a noticeable way in the event of sudden braking."

"We Offer Adaptive LED Headlight Options in All Vehicles"

Stating that they offer adaptive LED headlight options in all vehicles, Bancıoğlu explained its features as follows; "This system automatically activates the high beams to provide more illumination, when necessary, especially during nighttime driving. In the event of an oncoming vehicle or when another vehicle pulls in front, it automatically adjusts back to the normal driving position. This stands out as a system that supports the driver’s safety while allowing for adjustments without distracting their attention."

"Volvo Trucks Offers Its Customers Different Cabin Options"

Stating that "Volvo Trucks offers its customers different cabin options based on various driving conditions and operational requirements." Bancıoğlu continued his words as follows; "The vehicle we are in is an XL cabin. The height from where you are to the ceiling is 2110 millimeters. We also have an XXL cabin option, which expands the cabin by an additional 25 centimeters at the back. This provides the driver with both a larger living space and a wider bed option."

"The Steering Wheel Can Be Adjusted in a Way That Allows the Driver to Be Most Comfortable on the Road"

"There Is a System That Enables the Driver to Make Improvements for Themselves"

Listing the features inside the cabin, Bancıoğlu concluded his words by saying that; “The steering wheel can be adjusted in a way that allows the driver to be most comfortable on the road. Inside the cabin, there are numerous storage areas where the driver can place their belongings. Type C outlets are located both on the vehicle's center console and on the dashboard. There are armrests for both the driver and passenger sides to enhance comfort. There is a 33-liter refrigerator. All information that will alert the driver during driving is displayed on the main screen. Additionally, many pieces of supporting driving information are shared with the driver on the side screen. There is a system that continuously alerts the driver, allowing them to optimize and improve themselves continuously.”

“A DRIVER'S FIRST CHOICE IS ALWAYS VOLVO”

“A 5% FUEL SAVINGS IS A SIGNIFICANT FIGURE”

“WITH AERO, WE WILL ALSO HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT”

Abdurrahman Yılmaz, the owner of Metalog Logistics, added the Volvo FH Aero as the 50th vehicle to their fleet, which consists entirely of Volvo Trucks brand vehicles. Yılmaz pointed out that the significant reduction in carbon footprint was a major factor in choosing the Volvo FH Aero, and he emphasized that the 5% fuel savings provided by the vehicle is a substantial figure.

“We Have Been Transporting to Europe Since 2021”

“Volvo Is the Unchanging Brand of Our Fleet”

Describing the services of Metalog, founded in 2021, Yılmaz said that; “All of our transportation is focused on international logistics. We transport to Europe, primarily along the routes of Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Slovakia. We have 50 vehicles in our fleet. Except for five refrigerated vehicles, all of our vehicles are tarpaulin trucks, transporting a wide range of product groups from automotive to textiles and from plastic raw materials to technology. Our entire fleet consists of Volvo brand vehicles. Volvo is the constant brand of our fleet. The Aero is our 50th vehicle.”

“We Look at the Advantages It Will Provide Us After Using the Product for Five Years”

“The Most Accurate Answer to Many Problems in Turkey Is Volvo”

Stating that there are many reasons for choosing Volvo, Yılmaz said that; “We purchase  a commercial product. This commercial product needs to be suitable for our long-term business relationship. We look at whether the product will have real value in the second-hand market after using it for five years, its fuel savings, the suitability of the service provided during and after the warranty period, and its product quality. In other words, we consider not only its price but also the advantages it will provide us after using it for five years. I believe that the most accurate answer to many problems in Turkey is Volvo. We have tested and experienced this. We prefer Volvo because we have always seen benefits in terms of fuel consumption, product quality, durability during long-term use, and second-hand value.”

“A Driver's First Choice Is Always Volvo”

Stating that the preference of drivers greatly influences Volvo choices and mentioning that more than 50% of the work in their sector relies on maintaining driver organization, Yılmaz said that; “A large part of the job is to retain qualified drivers, manage them correctly, make them happy, and of course, respond to their comfort and needs. If you ask anyone objectively, a driver’s first choice is always Volvo. Volvo is a significant factor in a driver’s decision to choose a company. Additionally, the quality of life and safety of the driver are also very important. As we have often seen in serious accidents involving Volvo vehicles, the driver can exit the vehicle with just minor scratches. The features of vehicles equipped with safety systems that affect human life play a significant role in their preference.”

"A 5% Fuel Savings Is a Significant Figure"

"With Aero, We Will Also Have an Impact on the Environment"

Speaking about their choice of the Volvo FH Aero as their 50th vehicle, Yılmaz said that; “A new cabin design has been made for the Aero. With this design, we anticipate significant savings in fuel. Fuel is currently the biggest expense in the transportation sector. A 5% fuel saving is a significant figure. When you multiply the fuel figures by 50 vehicles, the savings you achieve cannot be obtained from any other item. Moreover, as you know, in the new world, the carbon footprint is of great importance. With this new design, there will also be a significant reduction in our carbon footprint. Thus, as an environmentally conscious company, we will also have a contribution to the environment. Another main reason for our choice is actually this.”

“Volvo Trucks is a World Brand in Authorized Service”

“We Have Not Seen Any of Our Calls Delayed to the Next Day in Europe”

Expressing his views on Volvo Trucks’ authorized service structure, Yılmaz concluded his words by saying that; “Volvo Trucks is a world brand in authorized service as well. Regardless of where you are, whether in Turkey, Europe, or anywhere in the world, having the ability to connect with a Turkish-speaking communication line staff member at the push of a button and for the authorized service to reach out to you are very, very important matters. We have not seen any of our calls delayed to the next day in Europe. In that sense, I believe the brand provides us with a significant advantage as customers.”
